Muktsar, January 10
Harcharan Singh Brar ‘Sotha’, the newly appointed district Congress chief, has remained on various positions in the past.
He started his political career as a block president of the Youth Congress about three decades ago. He is a maternal uncle of former Indian Youth Congress chief and Gidderbaha MLA Amrinder Singh Raja Warring.
Notably, he was also in the race for the Congress ticket from Gidderbaha during the Assembly elections in 2012, but the party fielded Warring.
He had, however, supported Warring. In political circles, he is called as ‘mama’, just because of his relations with Warring.
The 55-year-old Brar was first appointed as the Muktsar block president of the Youth Congress in 1989. Thereafter, he was appointed vice-president of Youth Congress, Faridkot district, in 1990.
In 1994, he became the joint secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress. Later, in 1997, he became the secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress. Thereafter, he became the general secretary of the Punjab Youth Congress in 1998.
He has also served as a special invitee to the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), secretary of the PPCC, and delegate of the PPCC. Before this, he was serving as general secretary of the PPCC.
Brar, a graduate, is a farmer and an entrepreneur. He runs educational institutes.
While talking to The Tribune on Friday, Harcharan Brar said, “I am a staunch Congressman and thankful to the party leaders for giving me this post. I have attended almost every major programme of the party in the past about 30 years and have used this experience to strengthen the party in Muktsar district. Besides, I will take all party leaders along and follow their guidance.”
Notably, Gurmeet Singh Khudian, a Congress leader from Lambi, son of former MP Jagdev Singh Khudian, is the outgoing district president of the party.
