Finance Minister Manpreet Singh Badal has directed the district administration to impose a strict ban on the use of plastic carry bags in the city.

Manpreet said while inspecting manholes, it came to light that plastic carry bags were lying inside them, becoming a major reason for sewerage blockage.

Acting on it, Deputy Commissioner B Srinivasan on Tuesday held a meeting with officials of various departments. At the meeting, the DC directed them to strictly impose the ban on the sale of plastic polythene bags in the city.

He also reviewed the steps taken by the Punjab Pollution Control Board, civic body, market committee and other department to check the sale of polythene bags in the city. He also directed them to make a joint team for conducting a checking on a regular basis.

The DC also directed the officials to issue a challan and impose a penalty if any shopkeeper or customer is found using the bag made of plastic.

He said the joint team should send a weekly report of the checking conducted by it to his office. The DC also asked the officials to make residents aware of the side effects of plastic polythene bags.

SP Harpreet Singh Sandhu, SE Sandeep Gupta, Joint Deputy Director, Local Bodies Department, Kulwant Singh, PPCB SDO Ravi Kumar and others were present in the meeting.
