The Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Talwandi Sabo, Baljinder Kaur, said improving the law and order situation in her constituency would be her primary focus as she began work.

Speaking to Bathinda Tribune, the first-time MLA, who is also the state president of the AAP women’s wing, said, “Over the past years, there have been several criminal incidents in the constituency. Workers, aligned with political parties, had openly brandished arms during the by-polls here but the police didn’t do anything. Recently, there were fights over the ownership of truck unions. The deteriorating law and order situation in the constituency is in need of improvement.”

She said since Talwandi Sabo was a revered land, the drug menace should be eradicated from here.

“People come here to pay obeisance at the Takht Damdama Saheb. We need to weed out the problem of drug peddling. This will also improve the law and order situation as unemployed youth resort to taking drugs and also indulge in criminal activities to earn money to buy drugs,” she said.

She added that while she would work towards keeping the promises that AAP made to the voters before the elections, she would also make sure that she took the voice of the people to the state Assembly and also put pressure on the government to fulfil its own promises.

Other problems that the people of the constituency are facing include lack of adequate employment opportunities and inadequate water supply in various areas of the constituency, Kaur said.

“Pollution caused by the refinery is also a major concern in this area. Apart from polluting land, air and water, it is also causing damage to the crops,” the AAP MLA said.

“Stray animals hurt commuters, cause accidents and also cause damage to crops. It’s a shame that despite spending money on building cattle pounds and sterilisation of dogs, people have not got any respite. The funds, which are being collected in the name of these schemes, are being embezzled and that too needs to be taken care of,” Baljinder Kaur added.
