Ludhiana duo held with habit-forming tablets

In its ongoing campaign against the menace of illegal drug sale, the Mansa police on Wednesday arrested a Ludhiana-based man and a woman with 1.37 lakh habit-forming tablets.

The accused have been identified as Nirmal Singh, a resident of Dakha village of Ludhiana, and his accomplice Manpreet Kaur from the same village. Nirmal was earlier booked by the Ludhiana police in 2013 when he was caught carrying 20-kg poppy husk.

Divulging more details about the case, Mansa SSP Mandhir Singh said the duo was arrested by a team from the Boha police station, led by ASI Amreek Singh. The police team had laid a ‘naka’ near a drain of Gamiwala village in Boha where they stopped a Hyundai Accent car bearing registration number of Chandigarh. During checking, Alplazolam and Calvidol tablets were recovered from the car, driven by Nirmal.

Mandhir Singh further stated that the accused tried to make fast money by purchasing the habit-forming drugs from Haryana for Rs 1.25 lakh. They had paid a sum of Rs 80,000 out of the total amount and promised to pay the remaining to the seller in Haryana after the sale of tablets in Punjab.

They paid Rs 1,000 for one small case (of 500 tablets) of Calvidol which was to be further sold to the addicts for Rs 1,700 to Rs 1,800. Similarly, they bought the small packet of Alplazolam for Rs 450 from Haryana, which was to be further sold to the addicts in Punjab for Rs 1,000 to Rs 1,200.

The SSP said a case under Sections 22, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered against both the accused and further investigation was on.
