Union Minister Maneka Gandhi’s NGO on Wednesday came to the rescue of a blind dog at Janata Nagar here after a local resident, Sahib Singh, brought the matter to its notice.

Talking to The Tribune, Sahib Singh said, “I first saw the dog when some people were pelting the dog with stones. They were also trying to throw the dog into the canal. When I stopped them, they said it was a rabid dog and it may harm area residents. Later, it came to light that the dog was blind and was barking just to secure itself.”

Sahib said initially, he made calls to MC officials, but they refused to rescue the dog.

“I also approached various NGOs working in the city, but nobody came forward for help. Later, Aasra Welfare Society president Ramesh Mehta reached the spot and he called up Maneka Gandhi’s Animal Welfare Society,” he added.

Subsequently, Maneka Gandhi’s personal assistant called up SP (City) Gurmeet Singh asking him to rescue the blind dog.

The SP (City) immediately asked MC officials to save the dog, but they again refused. Later, a local NGO rescued the dog after ADC Sakshi Sawhney stepped in.
