Bathinda, August 23
The General House meeting of the Municipal Corporation Bathinda (MCB) scheduled to be held on August 24 has been postponed till further orders.
It is stated that the decision has been taken due to the tense atmosphere in the state ahead of the hearing in the case of Dera Sacha Sauda sect head Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh.
Though the new date has not been decided, it is expected that the next meeting will be held in the first week of September.
Municipal Commissioner Sanyam Aggarwal said the situation was tense and the district administration had deployed MCB officials on duty due to which the decision to postpone the meeting has been taken.
He also said that the councillors have been conveyed the message in this regard.
It is worth mentioning that after the formation of the Congress government in the state, the second House meeting was convened. In this, 37 proposals for different development works were to be presented, but due to the suspension of the meeting, the proposals now hang fire.
Proposals relating to the construction of new roads— to cost an estimated Rs 2.5 crore at the Industrial Growth Centre, building of two parks in the trans-railway line area, calling for expression of interest for installing the LED lights, giving Rs 25 lakh for the dog sterilisation project, subletting the maintenance of 32 new toilets on contract— were to be taken up for discussion and approval.
MCB sources claim that another reason for postponing the meeting was that the councillors were irked over the overflow of sewage and irregular water supply in various areas of the city and they had told Mayor Balwant Rai Nath that they would raise the issue in the House and stage protest and the tense situation in the state was merely an alibi for it.
It may be mentioned that the General House meeting of the MCB has to been called once a month, but the meeting was called after a gap of four months. The last meeting was held on May 8.
