Bathinda: The city will face a power cut from 9 am to 5 pm on Sunday as the PSPCL is set to carry out some repair work at the 66kv substation and 11kv fitter stadium. XEN Gagandeep Singla and SDO Jatinder Singh Sidhu said in a press statement that Chandsar Basti, Kishori Ram Road, Khanaiya Nagar, Pukhraj Colony, Hanuman Chowk and the Stadium area would face a power cut. Rs 1.50 lakh, jewellery stolen

Bathinda: Thieves stole Rs 1.50 lakh in cash and jewellery from a house at Ballo village of the Rampura subdivision last week. They also tried to set a tractor, parked inside the house, on fire. A case in this regard has been registered on Saturday. No accused has been arrested yet. The Rampura Sadar police have started investigating the case. Jagseer Singh, a resident of Ballo village, told the police that unidentified persons had stolen Rs 1.50 lakh and jewellery on the intervening night of September 29 and 30. He told the police that the accused also attempted to set his tractor on fire. The accused also threw electricity wire in a water tank. A case under Sections 457, 380, 436 and 511 of the IPC has been registered against the unidentified accused. Police officer Baljeet Singh, who investigating the case, said they had received a complaint on Friday and a case was registered immediately. TNS

Three booked for fraud 

Bathinda: The Kotwali police have registered a case against three persons for duping a resident of Rs 3.5 lakh on the pretext of proving a job to his son in the Punjab Police. Complainant Nayab Singh, a resident of Gill Kalan village, told the police that Rajneesh Kumar, his mother Parkash Devi, both residents of Gidderbaha, and Vandana Rani, a resident of Mansa, had met him a few months ago and offered to provide a job to his son in the Punjab Police as a constable. As per the deal, he gave them Rs 3.5 lakh at Hanuman Chowk in Bathinda, the complainant added. He said the accused neither provided a job to his son nor they returned the money.  After an inquiry, the police have booked Rajneesh Kumar, Parkash Devi and Vandana Rani under Sections 420, 468, 471 and 120-B of the IPC. New students welcomed

Bathinda: The Civil Engineering Department of the Giani Zail Singh Campus College of Engineering and Technology, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University, Bathinda, organised a freshers' party, "Parichay 2K17" for the first-year students on Saturday here. Vice-Chancellor Dr Mohan Paul Singh Ishar appreciated the efforts of the department and sent his best wishes for the first-year students. Prof Manjeet Bansal, head of the department, also addressed the students. While Priyanshu Ranjan was adjudged Mr Fresher, Miss Fresher was Lovepreet Kaur. TNS

Hackathon held

Bathinda: The Baba Farid Group of Institutions organised a two-day 'Hackathon-2017' with the support of open-e-school. The theme of the event was 'Code for Smart City' under which coding of smart innovations for solving the problems faced by society with the help of technology. Vikas Ahuja, head of Infosys Development Center, Chandigarh, attended the programme as the chief guest. In the web development competition for students of polytechnic colleges, Manmit Bansal, Manpreet Kaur, Priya Jot and Jessica of Government Polytechnic College and Hardeep Kaur of Bhai Mani Singh Polytechnic College got the first position whereas Harmanpreet Singh, Lokesh Kumar and Rohit Kumar of Government Polytechnic College, Bathinda, and Amandeep Kaur, Seema Kaur and Gagandeep Kaur of Bhai Mani Singh Polytechnic College bagged the second position. Workshop organised

Bathinda: Gems Public School organised a workshop on the ill-effects of technology on the younger generation for parents on Saturday. Dr Ajay Gupta and Dr Nidhi Gupta elaborated on various ill-effects of using devices like cellphones, tablets, laptops etc on children. Doctors opined that the parents' positive role is immensely important. Parents must have healthy talks with their wards to avoid any kind of confusions and conflicts in their lives, they added. School principal Anju Nagpal thanked the doctors for their valuable talk. TNS
