Suffering from multiple cysts, an 11-year-old underwent a rare surgery at Adesh Dental Hospital. Doctors at the hospital revealed that the case of such multiple cysts is a rare occurrence involving the lower right side of the jaw. The cyst or cavity filled with fluid was of the size of a lemon. If not operated, then the cyst would have enlarged and caused a fracture in the jaw within a few days.

The surgery was performed by the oral surgeons of the Adesh Institute of Dental Sciences and Research, Dr Ritesh Gupta, professor and head of the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery; Dr Rupinder Bansal, reader, department of oral and maxillofacial surgery and Dr Amanish Singh, principal and head, department of orthodontics.

The operation went on for three long hours and was performed under general anaesthesia. The patient is recovering well and will be discharged within a few days. The post surgical check-up will go on for six months. The patient, his parents and relatives, were both relieved and happy with the outcome of the surgical procedure.

“It’s a rare kind of surgery that takes place in the case of multiple cysts. The patient’s jaw, filled with fluid, was of the size of a lemon and in such cases, the cyst needs to be operated immediately as it becomes enlarged and can cause fracture in the jaw within a few days,” said Dr Ritesh Gupta, oral surgeon.
