Bathinda, August 1
Residents of Power House Road and Guru Arjun Dev Nagar staged a protest against the installation of a mobile phone tower in their area.
Residents have also filed a complainant with the SDO of Punjab State Power Corporation (PSCPL) against Relience Company. In the complaint, they alleged that the company was installing a mobile tower in their area by befooling people.
Locals said officials of the company told them that they were installing a surveillance tower but actually they were installing the mobile tower. They install tower during the night when there is less traffic on the road, they added.
The protesters said the installation of mobile towers in the residential areas was hazardous to the health of the residents, especially children, as these towers emit and receive harmful waves. They said the tower should not be installed at any cost. They said it had been scientifically proven that such radiations might also cause fatal diseases such as cancer and hence, they would not allow the installation of the tower in their area. The protesters said they would approach the district administration and the Municipal Corporation.
They will also take up the issue with Deputy Commissioner Dr Basant Garg and Mayor Balwant Rai Nath. A few people are flouting the norms and putting their lives at risk for earning, they added.
In their letter to the SDO, residents demanded that the PSPCL should not give an electricity connection to the company for this mobile tower.
