Seminar held to celebrate National Handloom Day

A seminar was organised to celebrate the third edition of National Handloom Day at the Central University of Punjab here today.

Vice-Chancellor of the university Dr RK Kohli was the chief guest on the occasion.

Addressing the gathering, the VC said the Union Government was celebrating Handloom Day to strengthen the Indian handloom industry and to raise the financial status of the people who are engaged in this field.

He added that apart from agriculture, the handloom industry generates employment opportunities for the people.

Elaborating on the statistics of the industry, the VC said directly and indirectly almost 43 lakh weavers were engaged in the industry across the country.

The VC added that it was a matter of pride for the country that almost 95 per cent of the total hand-woven clothes in the world was produced in India and then exported.

The VC said one of the aims to celebrate the day was bringing the limelight back to the handloom industry of the country.

He said the day was also celebrated to inspire and motivate Indians to encourage the industry by making sure that they buy handloom products.

Anil Gaur, Deputy Director, Field Publicity, Ministry of Information and Broadcast; BB Sharma, Additional Director; and several other guests were present on the occasion.
