As many as 112 sewing machines were distributed today by chairman of the Zila Parishad, Gurpreet Maluka, at a function organised by the State Bank of Patiala at Bhagta Bhaike, a press release said.
The function was organised by the bank under its special training programme to give a fillip to self-employment in rural areas.
Maluka said, “As part of the government initiative towards making women self sufficient, as many as 659 were given training in sewing. A sizeable number, except those who were given the sewing machines, have been able to manage assignments. At least 347 women were given machines, under a separate programme, recently”.
The programme director of the State Bank of Patiala, Jasvir Singh, joint director, MM Bahl and president of the Bhagta Market Committee, Gagandeep Singh Grewal, were also present on the occasion.
