Commuters continue to lose their lives in road accidents on all major and link roads in urban and rural areas of the city.
The roundabout at the beginning of the recently completed Bathinda-Muktsar flyover has a technical fault which causes road accidents. Drivers of speeding vehicles fail to negotiate the sharp turn of the chowk which results in fatal mishaps as they lose control over their vehicles.
Daily commuters on the road said four vehicles had overturned at the chowk since the inception of the flyover but even then the authorities have turned a blind eye towards the issue.
“Earlier, a Mahindra Scorpio, a Mahindra Bolero, a concrete mixer truck and a mini-truck were overturned at the point and this morning, a heavy truck overturned and fell on a police picket adjoining the chowk,” said Harjinder Singh, a daily commuter. Policemen who used to sit inside the picket at the time of accident said they had a hair’s breadth escape in the accident as they were away to attend a meeting convened by senior officials or else they would have got sandwiched between the truck and the iron walls of the picket.
Similar mishaps occur at Goniana road and Barnala road which are being widened in a haphazard manner.
“The road widening projects have taken its toll on motorists as two-wheeler riders either get injured or killed while four-wheelers gets damaged considerably,” said Jagjiwan Singh, one of the recent road accident victims.
Volunteers of Sahara Jan Sewa, an NGO, said a policewoman got injured when a speeding motorcycle hit her near the Hajirattan chowk. The woman, Balwinder Kaur, was rushed to a hospital by volunteers of the NGO. In another road accident, two motorcycles collided with each other which caused injuries to a couple, Balkaran Singh and Veerpal Kaur of Mashana village, and another woman Paramjit Kaur of Amarpura Basti.
