To put a check on the increasing number of accidents on roads, some NRIs and local residents of Sewewala village in Jaito subdivision of Faridkot have chipped in with funds to install traffic convex oval mirrors at various ‘T Junctions’ on Bathinda-Kotkapura road, where blind turns were increasing the possibility of accidents.
A convex mirror, or simply put a curved mirror, is a mirror in which the reflective surface bulges toward the source of light. On streets, minor roads, alleys and smaller lanes with bends, where blind spots are a common hazard, these mirrors are of high benefit, said Dr Karandeep Singh, an NRI from Sewewala village.
These mirrors help in providing a good overview of the road, improving the safety. By giving a driver a better overview of the road, these make him aware of their surroundings and vehicles approaching. The drivers are able to anticipate dangerous situations and prevent accidents, said residents of Sewewala, who have formed Mata Sahib Kaur Sewewala Welfare Society for the improvement of hygienic conditions in the village and its surrounding area.
Other than Dr Karandeep Singh, many other NRIs, including Ranjit Kaur and Kulwant Singh of Canada, have provided funds to the Society to install these mirrors on the roadside on Bathinda-Kotkapura road. Members of the Society are now planning to make the people of the area aware of the benefit of these mirrors.
These mirrors are of benefit where roads cross each other or make a sharp turn. These eliminate blind spots and provides people with a good overview of their surroundings. The convex mirror is to provide safety for motorists on roads, driveways and in alleys where there is a lack of visibility, said Kumar Saurabh Raj, deputy commissioner of Faridkot, who during his visit to Sewewala village, praised the special endeavour of residents to make roads safer.
