A three-day skill test development workshop, organised by the department of architecture, Giani Zail Singh Campus College of Engineering and Technology (GZSCCET), a constituent college of Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University (MRSPTU), Bathinda, concluded here today.

The workshop was conducted by Prof Vikas C Shimpi, ex-faculty, College of Architecture, Nashik. The workshop aimed at giving a hands-on experience to the students by making models with small-scale brick using various construction techniques.

Professor Shimpi conceived the idea of teaching these construction techniques by means of small scale bricks and has patent rights on the bricks. He has conducted over 60 workshops across the nation in reputed architecture colleges. Nehdeep Kaur played a key role for taking the initiative in organising this workshop.

The students worked in groups to construct models with small-scale bricks. On the first day, Professor Shimpi briefed the students about the composition and proportions of mortar etc. Each group of students constructed small-scale models of different brick structures, including walls with English and Flemish bonds, different types of arches, domes, compound walls, steps, etc.

Students learned about different types of materials for building models on the basis of designed sketches/plans for better visualisation of actual construction in 3D aspects and use of paper in architectural model making.

MRSPTU vice-chancellor Prof (Dr) Mohan Paul Singh Ishar visited the exhibition of models prepared by the students and commended the efforts of Professor Shimpi as well as the department and students. Campus director Dr Gursharan Singh, registrar Dr Jasbir Singh Hundal and head of department Ripu Daman Singh appreciated the efforts and motivated the students.
