A workshop on “Explorations in Domains of Indian Sociology” was organised by Teaching Learning Centre, Central University of Punjab, here on Sunday. The aim was to strengthen the teaching and learning process within different targeted disciplines. Participants from eight states of the country — Uttarakhand, Madhya Pardesh, J&K, Uttar Pardesh, Himachal, Delhi, Maharashtra and Punjab — attended the programme.

In the inaugural address, eminent international sociologist and Padma Bhushan recipient prof TK Oommen and prof Nandu Ram highlighted the possibilities and difficulties, which different disciplines are facing while shifting away from the eurocentric approaches.

Oommen also appreciated the idea of TLC to focus on the Doaba, Malwa and Majha regions of Punjab in research studies. He correlated it with the development of the Chicago School of Thought in America, where Chicago city was studied with many perspectives in order to understand society and development within it.

The workshop thoroughly covered the issues and problems of teaching at peripheries, sexuality studies as a method to understand society, the importance of studying languages in everyday use, conceptualization and problems related to minorities, preparation of online open courses, the importance of quantitative methods, and the significance of studying different regions by different disciplines.
