Bathinda: The Rampura City police on Tuesday arrested a youth from Ramura village for attempting to rape a 13-year-old girl in his house. In a complaint lodged by the girl, it has been alleged that 19-year-old Vinod Kumar, a resident of Ropar, attempted to rape her in his home on Monday. She said when she started shouting, the accused fled from the place. Investigating officer Balwant Singh said Vinod Kumar had come to his grandparents house. He said Vinod attempted to rape the minor girl. “We have arrested the accused and a case has been registered against him under Sections 376, 511 and 354 of the IPC and Protection of Child against Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, Balwant Singh added.
Two assaulted in two cases
Two persons were assaulted in two incidents that took place last night in the city. In the first incident, around half a dozen persons attacked a youth at Dhobiana Basti. They broke the legs and jaw of the victim, identified as Rahul (25), a resident of Udham Singh Nagar. In the second incident, unidentified persons injured a 14-year-old boy by hitting a tile on his head at Kikar Bazaar. The victim has been identified as Sunny, who lives near the Delhi railway crossing.
Investors protest against Pearls
Members of the Insaaf Di Lehar, Punjab, on Tuesday held a meeting at Hazi Rattan Gurdwara against Pearls Company. They alleged that they had been duped by Pearls Company. Kulwant Singh, president, Insaaf Di Lehar, said the Supreme Court had ordered the CBI, SEBI and Lodha Committee over refunding the money of the investors, who were duped by the company, between February 2 and August 2, 2016 but they had not got their money back. He also stated that the earlier SAD-BJP and the present Congress government were interfering unnecessarily over the issue. TNS
Convocation held at CUP
Bathinda: Central University of Punjab, Bathinda (CUPB), organised its third convocation on its city campus. The ceremony started with the entrance of academic procession led by Prof Jagdeep Singh, registrar, CUPB. According to Prof RK Kohli, Vice-Chancellor, 337 students were awarded with degrees at the convocation in the presence of founder Chancellor Prof SS Johl and other august members of the executive council and the academic council of the university. Prof Johl expressed that with the determination and persistence, CUPB would certainly rise above the challenges and constraints being faced by it. A vote of thanks was rendered by Prof P Ramarao who encouraged the students to inculcate in themselves habits of discipline, punctuality and commitment to the task assigned. TNS
Students shine in varsity exams
Bathinda: Students of Baba Farid College of Engineering & Technology have bagged three merit positions in the university merit list declared by Maharaja Ranjeet Singh Punjab Technical University. Shivani Singh of BTech (IT) 3rd semester has bagged the first position by obtaining 80.40 per cent marks followed by Satyam Kumar Tiwari of BTech (EE) 3rd semester at third position with 84.80 per cent marks. Besides, Ramandeep Kaur of MTech (CSE) 3rd semester bagged the second position with 84.40 per cent marks in the university list. Students of BA-1st Semester-II of SSD Girls' College have excelled in the B.A-1st Semester-II examination. Ritika Jain got the first position, Bhavya second and Alisha third position. TNS
Vivekananda remembered
Bathinda: A function was organised at Malwa College Bathinda to mark the 125th anniversary of Swami Vivekananda's Chicago address at the World Parliament of Religions. Lalit Sachdeva, secretary, Swami Vivekananda Study Circle, Bathinda, was the chief guest on the occasion. College principal Prof NK Gosain spoke on the life, teachings and philosophy of Swami Vivekananda. Lalit Sachdeva in his address dwelt upon the philosophy of respecting all religions and his firm belief in universal toleration and his acceptance of all religions as true. TNS
