A resident of Thamangarh village in Maur subdivision of the district, Gurjot Singh, who was shot dead by unidentified assailants outside Townhouse complex in Orenda, Brampton in Canada on June 18, was cremated by his relatives at his native village on Monday.

According to the information, Gurjot had gone to Canada for higher studies a year ago.

His uncle Avtar Singh received a call from a person informing him about the demise of Gurjot Singh. Gurjot is survived by his sister and grandparents.

Officials at the Canadian Embassy had declined a request for an emergency visa to Avtar Singh to go Canada and bring back Gurjot’s body. Later, Minister of External Affair S Jaishakar took up the issue with the Canadian authorities and mad sure the the body was brought back.
