The Bombay High Court today allowed actor Salman Khan, who is out on bail after being convicted in the 2002 hit-and-run case, to travel to Dubai where is scheduled to perform at an awards ceremony this week.
Salman’s lawyers approached the court seeking permission for the actor to travel to Dubai for three days, from May 27-30. Vacation judge Shalini Phansalkar-Joshi while allowing the actor’s request imposed certain terms and conditions.
The court asked Khan to inform the authorities about his flight number, details of his stay abroad and his contact numbers. He will have to inform the Indian consulate on reaching Dubai. The actor will have to submit his passport to the authorities within 12 hours of his return to Mumbai.
“Since the applicant (Salman) is ready to abide by the conditions, his application deserves to be allowed,” the High Court said.
The court further directed Salman to submit additional cash security of Rs 2 lakh before the trial court prior to leaving the country.
On May 6, Salman was convicted by a sessions court of culpable homicide not amounting to murder and sentenced to five years in jail in the 2002 hit-and-run case. A man was killed and four others were wounded when Salman’s Land Cruiser ran over them while they were asleep on a pavement outside a bakery in suburban Bandra on September 28, 2002.
The High Court had on May 8 granted the actor bail and suspended his sentence pending hearing and final disposal of his appeal against conviction. (With PTI inputs)
