Northern Railway to provide walkie-talkies to constables

Sanjay Kishore, Chief Security Commissioner, Northern Railway, held the annual press conference in New Delhi on January 6. It was held as per the directives of Minister for Railways. Shashi Kumar, Sr. Divisional Security Commissioner, East, Delhi Division, and Santosh Chandran, Sr. Divisional Security Commissioner, West, Delhi Division, were also present on the occasion.

Reviewing the measures undertaken by the Railway Protection Force for safer travel during the recent years, Kishore briefed the media about various initiatives taken to tackle new problems of crime, especially in the online ticketing segment, child trafficking cases and drug dealers and border smuggling etc. Citing Northern Railway’s General Manager’s proposed plan to provide hand-held metal detectors, motorcycle and walkie-talkies at the level of constables, he said this would equip the force better especially those posted at outposts.  He said increasing the use of dependable Security Helpline 182 by railway passengers would help thwart crime in a timely manner and would also dispense with the need of escorts on all trains in a significant way.

He said the RPF of approximately 8,000 personnel handle a wide range of duties ranging from protecting and safeguarding Railway property, removing obstructions in the movement of railway property and escorting over 200 trains on Northern Railway as well in crime control. In view of the special security concerns in the Kashmir valley, the RPF escort all the trains running in the section as well as deal with all exigent situations arising from time to time.   Safety and security of women and children remains top most in the agenda of the RPF/Northern Railway. Bhairavi and Virangana in Delhi and Vaishali teams in Firozpur are specially constituted women RPF teams which are playing an active role in curbing crime against women.
