Omni channel eyewear retailer Lenskart plans to set up eyeglass frame unit at Manesar in Haryana. The proposed unit with manufacturing capacity of 50,000-60,000 units per month initially is likely to be operational in next one and a half year.
At present, the company has lens cutting and fitting unit in India and the frames are sourced from China. It sells around 2 lakh eyeglasses per month.
Himanshu Kishore, Vice- President — Retail Operations, North, said the company was working on a new platform where customers can purchase eyewear using their basic feature phones. “After studying the markets, especially tier-II and tier-III, we came to know that the penetration of internet is still cause of concern. In the absence of internet, it is difficult for the customers to purchase eyewear through our app or online. So, we are planning to introduce SMS-based platform which is currently in testing stage,” he added.
On being asked about the potential, he said 550 million people in the country need reading glasses but only 170 million people wear them. So, there is still huge potential.
Lenskart has currently over 365 stores in the country. It plans to take this count to over 500 by the end of the current fiscal. It also aims to enhance its ‘Home Eye Check Up’ service in the city.
