Can’t order to bring back Kohinoor: SC
New Delhi, April 21
The Supreme Court today refused to issue any directions to the government to take steps to reclaim Kohinoor diamond from Britain and to stop it from being auctioned.
A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar said it could not ask a foreign government not to auction a property. The Bench made it clear it could not pass an order as regards a property that was in a foreign land.
The Bench disposed of the petition by an NGO — All India Human Rights and Social Justice Front — seeking directions to bring back the treasured diamond to India, saying it was for the government to explore possibilities. Referring to the government’s affidavit, it said: “The Government of India continues to explore ways and means with the UK government on the issue.”
