Chanderpaul, son scripts history
Melbourne, March 14
West Indies batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul and his son Tagenarine have created history by achieving a unique feat of making fifties in the same first class match. Batting for Guyana in the regional four-day tournament at Sabina Park, Jamaica, Chanderpaul brought up his 136th first class half-century hours after his 20-year-old son had scored his on Day 2 of the match.
Opening for the team, the 20-year-old scored a fine 58, giving Guyana a solid start. Chanderpaul, who came in three down, made 57 runs to take the team’s total to 262 against Jamaica’s 255.
Like his father, Tagenarine is a left-hander and recently captained West Indies at the under-19 level. His 50 against Jamaica is his third in his 16-match career.
It’s for the first time that a father-son duo has notched up half-centuries in the same first class match since George Gunn and his son George struck tons for Nottinghamshire in 1931. In his illustrious career, Chanderpaul scored a total of 11,867 runs in 164 Test matches. –ANI
