Lalru: A 40-year-old unidentified person was killed while five others sustained injuries when a Haryana Roadways bus, in which they were travelling, reportedly hit a road roller near the Dappar toll plaza this afternoon. The injured were rushed to the GMCH, Sector 32, Chandigarh.According to the police, the incident took place at 3 pm when the bus, which was coming from the Ambala side, in a bid to overtake the road roller, collided with it. Sources said such was the impact of the collision that the first three seats of the bus came off following which the passengers sustained injuries. Following the accident, long queues were seen on the highway. Buses, cars and other vehicles were stranded on the highway. No case has been registered in this regard. OC
Bus overturns, passengers hurt
Kalka: A private bus overturned near Karanpur village of Pinjore on Wednesday. The accident took place at 6 am on the Pinjore-Manali National Highway 21-A .The passengers had a miraculous escape and sustained minor injuries. Bus driver Raju managed to flee. As many as 37 passengers were in the bus at the time of the incident, bus conductor Ajay said. The bus belonged to HP Holiday Tourism Co. The police are investigating the case. OC
17-hour power cut at Pinjore
Kalka: Pinjore residents were deprived of electricity for more than 17 hours. Several areas, including Kabir Panthi Mohalla, Chauna Chowk, Vishawkarma Colony and Bitna Road, are without electricity since Tuesday midnight. Several residents said they had put forth the problem of erratic power supply in the area in an open darbar organised by local MLA Latika Sharma recently. The MLA had also directed officials of the Power Department to take a serious note of the problem but nothing happened till date. The residents sought the intervention of the minister concerned and higher officials to solve the problem. OC

Chandigarh: Bharti Airtel on Wednesday announced the launch of *121# digital care platform in Hindi and Punjabi. “This is yet another industry first from Airtel to empower customers,” said Manu Sood, hub CEO, upper north. The facility is completely free of cost and does not require a data connection. It can be accessed via all smartphones and feature phones with regional language support. By simply dialing *121#, customers can get basic information like balance amount/recharge validity/ details of last few transactions etc. TNS
Suicide: Husband booked
Zirakpur: The local police on Wednesday booked three persons on the charge of abetment of suicide in connection with the death of a 28-year-old woman, who committed suicide by hanging herself at Bijanpur village near Dera Bassi. The deceased has been identified as Neelam (28), a resident of Barwala. The police have registered a case against the victim’s husband and In-laws on the complaint of her brother. Sources said the deceased’s brother Syamlal told the police that his sister was married to Gagandeep Singh in 2014 and was being tortured physically and mentally by her husband and in-laws for dowry for the past several months. On the basis of the statement, the police have registered a case against victim’s husband Gagandeep Singh and her in-laws Bagirath and Babli. OC
Delhi team reviews ODF status
Chandigarh: A government team from Delhi on Wednesday visited 17 sites in Chandigarh to review open defecation-free status. The review is carried every six months. The team visited villages, small colonies and sectors of Chandigarh to assess it. The team will compile its report and submit it to the Centre. All senior officials of the Municipal Corporation were accompanying them during the visit. The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) had last year declared Chandigarh as an open defecation-free (ODF) city under the Swachh Bharat Mission. The Quality Council of India (QCI) had granted the ODF status to the city after surveying as many as 73 cities. The survey, commissioned by the MoUD, checked the efforts of the local bodies to ensure their cities were free of open defecation. Now, the assessment is again done for the next season. TNS
DGP meets police officers
Chandigarh: A day after UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore presided over a meeting to review all aspects of crime in the city, DGP TS Luthra held a meeting with police officers regarding the same. Badnore had stressed on the need to have constant vigil in order to avoid any untoward incident threatening the crucial law and order situation in the city. The meeting held by the DGP on Wednesday was attended by all senior officers, including the SSP. The officers had a discussion on the measures that will be taken to make the city crime-free. TNS
One held with ganja
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Police arrested Naresh, a resident of Bapu Dham Colony, Sector 26, from near Verka Plant, Phase I Industrial Area, and recovered 550 grams of ganja from his possession. A case has been registered at the Industrial Area police station. TNS
Capacity-building programme
Patiala: DAV School, Patiala, organised a capacity-building programme for senior secondary teachers. It was conducted in the subjects of chemistry, business studies and accountancy. The workshop for chemistry was attended by seven teachers of Patiala and Ferozepur Zone. Neera Khurana acted as resource person of the day. In another workshop on business studies and accountancy, Nimmi Chigal and Anjali Gupta acted as resource persons. The programme was concluded with feedback forms.
Books released
The second edition of two poetry books 'Raat Da Registaan' and 'Akhar Bol Paye' written by Khalsa College Principal Dharminder Singh Ubha were released here on the college campus. The chief guest during the function was Satish Kumar Verma, former Dean Students Welfare, Punjabi University, and famous personality in Punjabi literature. Ubha said he started his literary journey in 1994 and the first book published was 'Raat Da Registaan'. In 2001 'Akhar Bol Paye', in 2005 'Boond Ton Saagar' and in 2017 'Tere Naal', poetry books, were published. oC
