160 awarded degrees at Ropar IIT

A total of 160 degrees were awarded during the sixth annual convocation of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Ropar, here today.
Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Principal Adviser to the Union Minister of Power and New and Renewable Energy, was the chief guest.
The degrees awarded include 118 (BTech), 11 (MTech), 18 (MSc) and 13 (PhD). Tushar Agarwal, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, received the President of India gold medal among graduating students of BTech. The director gold medal was awarded to Swapnil Rai of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
Institute silver medals were given to Abhiskek Kumar, BTech, electrical engineering; Asheesh Kumar Sharma, MTech, Mechanical Engineering; Deeksha Suthar, MSc, chemistry programme; Mohit Sood, MSc, physics programme; and Nihal Chand, MSc in mathematics programme.
Addressing the students, Director SK Das said during the past year, the institute saw an increase in the student strength from 820 to 1,120 and an increase in the faculty strength from 84 to 115.
As per recent data, this year, the institute’s average citations per paper stood at 8.23, which was the highest among all new IITs, he said. — TNS
