2-day livestock fair ends at Chappar Chiri, nukra horse draws crowd

The two-day livestock fair at Chappar Chiri ended with Mohali MLA Balbir Singh Sidhu distributing certificates and prizes worth Rs 7 lakh among winners of 55 contests.

On the occasion, Dr Amarjit Singh, Director, Animal Husbandry Department, Punjab, said a national-level competition would be held in Patiala from December 1 to 5, in which the total prize money would be Rs 1.25 crore and more than 250 animal breeders were expected to participatem in the fair.

Paramatma Saroop, Deputy Director, Animal Husbandry Department, Mohali, said, “At the fair, different breeds of horses, cattle, goats, heifers, dogs and roosters were judged according.”

A murrah buffalo from Raipur village was declared the best. In the cattle milking contest, a Jersey cow from Kamaljit Dairy Farm won.

Major attraction at the fair was a nukra horse, which was declared the best in the competition. The 5-year-old horse, Noora, was 65-inch tall and valued at Rs 50 lakh.

His owner Jatinder Singh from Bakarpur said that he had purchased the horse for Rs 13 lakh but its value increased due to its superior breed and performance in various competitions.

Jatinder Singh, who owns 14 horses, said Noora ate 7-kg apples and 10-kg peanuts daily.

“He has been the champion at cattle fairs for three years.

Another nukra mare, Billo, owned by Jatinder, won the contest in the female category.

Honeypreet best calf   

  • Making her debut, two-month-old female calf Honeypreetw on three contests, beating more than 20 competitors.  
  • However, her name prompted more attention than her performance. Her owner Mankirat Singh Bhangu, who owns a farm in Bhago Majra village, said he had named her Honeypreet as she was born on August 25.
  • “Honeypreet Insan, the confidante of jailed godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh was in the news at that time. I just decided to name her Honeypreet. I am not a follower of the godman,” he said. 
  • The calf won in the milk teeth category (1-28 months) and the calf rally. She was declared the best murrah calf. 
  • "She drinks 15 litres of milk a day,” he said.
