The Mohali police today claimed to have solved the murder case of Raj Kumar, a retired employee of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, with the arrest of two youths. He was found murdered in the kitchen of his house at Shivalik Vihar 2 in Nayagaon on Tuesday.
The suspects have been identified as Shubham Growar (20), a resident of of Rohtak district in Haryana, and Ishtikhar Khan (24), a resident of Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh. Both were at present staying at Khuda Ali Sher.
Kuldeep Singh Chahal, SSP, Mohali, said Shubham and Ishtikhar were well-known to Raj Kumar. They used to meet him at a barber’s shop in Nayagaon. Raj Kumar had told them that he would receive a share of Rs 3 lakh from his deceased father’s property. He had revealed that an amount of Rs 9 lakh was to be shared equally with his brother and sister. After knowing this, the suspects allegedly planned a robbery. On the fateful day, the two entered Raj Kumar’s house with an intention of robbery. They allegedly murdered Raj Kumar with a sharp weapon on failing to find the cash.
Chahal said the victim was staying with his wife and son at Nayagaon and had retired in December. At the time of the incident, Kumar was alone at home. His son Inderjit was away for his duty at IT Park, Chandigarh. The matter came to light when Inderjit returned home and informed the police after finding the main entrance door of the house open.
The SSP said a case under Section 302 of the IPC had been registered. They were produced in a court today, which sent them to three-day police custody. The police are yet to recover the weapon used in the crime.
