3,368 Class IX, XI students flunk compartment exam

As many as 3,368 Class IX and XI students studying at government schools failed in compartment exam.

A total of 5,972 students, who had got compartment in Class IX and XI appeared for the exam in May.

Now, the department has once again decided to give the students another chance to clear the exam. Out of 3,150, only 901 students who got the compartment in Class IX could clear the exam.

Moroever, out of 2,822 Class XI students, 1,119 students could not clear the exam.

After the declaration of compartment results, parents and students protested at Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Sector 20, as 33 students had again failed in economics. Although the copies of students were rechecked by examiners, none of the students could clear the exam.

Later, the parents approached the higher officials, after which it was decided that students would be given another chance.

UT Education Secretary BL Sharma said, “There is a lot of hue and cry over the results. If some students pass by giving additional instructions, then we may give them another chance. Also, the percentage of students who have cleared the retest is quite low. Hence, we are ought to give them another chance.”

No grace marks policy to teach students a lesson

In 2017-18 session, as many as 3,000 students were promoted from Class IX to X after awarding grace marks, as a result of which only 48.51 per cent of students passed the Central Board for Senior Secondary Education (CBSE) Class X exams.

In the aftermath of poor results, the Education Secretary issued a diktat to revoke the practice of awarding 10-15 grace marks to the students.

Due to the discontinuation of the grace marks this year, the pass percentage of Class IX this year decreased from 72.23 per cent (2017-18) to 55.05 per cent (2018-19) while there was a fall of 14 per cent in pass percentage of Class XI.

A total of 5,984 students failed in Class IX and XI annual exams this year.
