33% dip in applications for PG, 21% for UG courses

The applications for 48 postgraduate courses under CET (PG) has dipped by 33.5 per cent at Panjab University.

The CET (PG) was conducted on Sunday and Monday.

There were 15,548 applications this year while in 2017, there were 23,408. In 2016, 22,592 aspirants had applied for various courses.

For CET (UG), which comprises BSc (honour school) in different subjects and BPharmacy, the applications have dipped by close to 21 per cent. There were 8,900 applications this year while in 2017, there were 11,257 and in 2016, there were 17,195.

Basic sciences are popular than professional courses

Basic sciences such as chemistry and physics continue to be popular than professional courses — Masters of Computer Applications (MCA), LLM, Masters in Engineering (ME), Master in Technology (MTech) and Master of Arts (MA) in Journalism and Mass Communication. 

For MSc (chemistry), a total of 2,286 applications came against 17 seats. It implies over 134 students would be competing for a single seat. However, last time more than 3,400 applications were recieved.

For MSc in physics, physics and electronics and medical physics, there were 1,477 applications against 68 seats — 40 in Physics, 20 in physics and electronics and eight in medical physics. It implies 21 candidates would be competing for one seat. Last time, there were more than 2,400 applications.

As many as 1,361 applications have come for the MSc in zoology for 14 seats, which implies there are over 97 students competing for one seat. Last time, there were more than 1,800 applications.

For botany, there are 1,216 applications for 29 seats. The equation comes to about 42 candidates for one seat. There were 1,690 applications last time. There are 1,049 applications for MSc (mathematics) against 35 seats.  

Professional courses

There is dip in number of applications for professional courses as compared to the last year. For MCA, there are 673 applications for 95 seats — just seven candidates appearing for one seat.

For 40 seats in MA (journalism and mass communication), there have been just 300 applications.

The applications in ME or MTech are much lower 

Only in LLM, there has been rise in applications. Against 659 applications last year, there were 774 this time against 46 seats — 17 students competing against single seat.
