As many as 2,147 students of Class IX and XI will not be promoted to the next class as they could not pass the second retest, which was held on May 28.
A total of 5,984 students failed in the Class IX and XI annual examination this year. Therefore, 36 per cent students could not be promoted despite being given two chances by the Education Department. As many as 3,098 students who failed in the first retest were given a second chance. This was for the first time that the Education Department decided to give a second chance to students.
This year, after the discontinuation of the practice of giving 15-20 grace marks to students, the pass percentage for Class IX decreased by 17.18 per cent — from 72.23 per cent in 2017-18 to 55.05 per cent in 2018-19 — while there was a fall of 14 per cent in the pass percentage for Class XI.
Detention policy awaits nod
In the 2018-19 session, the Education Department recommended 1,143 Class VIII students for improvement. The department recommended so many students for improvement in anticipation that the detention policy will receive the Centre’s nod.
The department did not detain any student in Class VIII as the UT detention policy is yet to get approval from the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD).
The Class VIII students were to be assessed after being given remedial classes if the MHRD had approved the detention policy.
Earlier, in view of the no-detention policy, the students who performed poorly in Class VIII were given grace marks and promoted to Class IX.
