Chandigarh, July 22

A 36-year-old man was killed while five others were injured, one of them seriously, after a Fortuner and a Mahindra pick-up met with an accident at the Sector  46/47/48/49 light point on the intervening night of July 21 and 22.

Four youths, natives of Jalandhar, were travelling in the Fortuner when it met with an accident with the jeep, that had two occupants. The accident took place around 2.30 am.

While the youths were on their way back to Jalandhar, two cousins riding the jeep, one of whom died, were returning to Ferozepur after unloading vegetables at the grain market in Sector 26.

The deceased has been identified as Rajwinder Singh (36). He was sitting next to his cousin Sukhchain, who was driving the jeep when the accident took place.

Those who were in the Fortuner have been identified as Shivash Khanna, Hainsh and Tushar, students of a private college in Jalandhar, and another youth, Sahil, who was driving the SUV. The impact of the collision was so strong that the rear side of the SUV was completely damaged while the left side of the jeep, where the victim who died was sitting, was also wrecked.

The police said Sahil and Tushar, who were in the front seats of the SUV, escaped with minor injuries, while Shivash was critically injured.

A passerby informed the police about the accident following which PCR teams rushed to the spot. The police found the jeep occupants in the vehicle, while the youths riding the SUV had already been rushed to the hospital in some private vehicle.

The police said Rajwinder and Sukhchain were taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, in a PCR vehicle. Rajwinder succumbed to his injuries during treatment, while Sukhchain is still admitted to the hospital.

Police officials said after a few hours they received information that one of the youths riding the SUV was admitted to the PGI. His kin later shifted him to a private hospital in Mohali.

The police have registered a case  against Sahil at the Sector 49 police station. The accused was arrested and later released on bail.
