Chandigarh, March 22
Seven months after a 75-year-old city resident was killed in a hit-and-run at Sector 10 here, the accused surrendered in a court here on Thursday.
Harjasneet Singh Chahal came to the court in the evening and surrendered after his bail plea was rejected by the Supreme Court last week.
Chahal was earlier booked under Section 304-A (causing death due to negligence). However, a month later he was booked under Section 304-II (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the IPC.
Chahal was arrested and released on bail two days after the incident.
However, after Section 304-II was added to the case in September 2017, his bail was rejected. He was said to be absconding since then.
In January this year, the UT police had also announced a reward of Rs 25,000 on Chahal.
Chahal’s advocates Khushdeep Mann and Rabindra Pandit said they were awaiting the Supreme Court’s decision on his bail, which came on March 19, and now their client has surrendered. Chahal said, “I surrendered after exhausting my legal remedies.”
Subodh Kumar Gupta of Sector 4 here was killed on August 6, 2017, after being hit by Bathinda resident Chahal’s SUV while he was crossing a road in Sector 10.
