Aarush Sharma overcame a tough challenge from Yash Aggarwal to reach the boys’ U-16 pre-quarterfinals of the ongoing Roots-AITA Challenge Series (CS-&) National Ranking Championships in Zirakpur here today.
Sharma won the first set 6-3, but in the next set Aggarwal proved to be a hard nut to crack. Aggarwal registered a comeback 7-6(5) win to level the scores. In the decider, Sharma once again displayed his class to pull off a 6-2 victory. Harmanjit Singh also advanced by registering a hard-fought win over Harshank Parith. Harmanjit won the first set 6-2, but Parith returned in the second set by logging a 6-4 victory. Parith started the final set by winning the first game. However, Harmanjit raced away to register a 6-1 win.
Shraeyvir easily defeated Shivam Wadhawan 6-1 6-1 and Raghav Chaudhary also logged a similar win over Aryan Jolly. Anirudh Sangra beat Harwin Singh 6-2 6-0, while Arnav Malik outplayed Aryan Sinha 6-3 6-2. Dhruv Pratap Singh also advanced by defeating Abhishek Luthra 6-4 6-1. Umang Singh posted a 6-1 6-3 win over Gurpuneet Singh and Kartik S Kumar ousted Nandit Negi 6-0 6-3. In the last two matches, Damanpreet Singh beat Yajat Khanna 7-5 6-3 and Jashandeep Singh overpowered Arya Vaibhav 6-1 6-1.
In the boys’ U-18 main draw, Naresh Badgujar moved into the pre-quarterfinals by defeating Saarth Kharat 6-0 6-2. Kartik S Kumar also logged an easy 6-2 6-1 win over Sampit Jain and Shubh Negi ousted Kartik Bansal 6-0 6-0 without conceding a single game. Om Malhotra marched ahead by defeating Anant Goyal 6-2 6-4 and Avish Verma outplayed Sukhvinder Singh 6-0 6-3. Arshank Parith faced some resistance from Yashvardhan Gaur before registering a 7-6(6) 7-6(6) win. —TNS
