While the annual per capita income of Chandigarh has increased by around 15,000 in one year, it has failed to improve its position at the national level. The city has been placed fourth in the national ranking after Goa, Delhi and Sikkim.

As per the figures released by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, Goa has retained the top position with per capita income of Rs 3,75,550 on the current prices for the year 2016-17.

The per capita income of Chandigarh has been recorded at Rs 2,37,616 for the year, which is lower than that of Delhi and Sikkim. The per capita income of Delhi and Sikkim is Rs 3,00,793 and Rs 2,70, 572, respectively.

Chandigarh was also placed fourth in per capita income for the year 2015-16.

Though the city saw an increase of around Rs 14,906 in the income this year, it failed to find a place among the top three states.

For some years before 2008, the city’s per capita income was the highest in the country.

Experts say that while the tertiary sector continues to be the growth engine of the local economy, its growth in some areas was hit in comparison with the previous years. Banking, insurance, telecommunication, hospitality, real estate, industry and transport are some of the segments that have always contributed towards the city’s income.

The city’s economy is divided into 14 sub-sectors grouped under three major sectors — primary, secondary and tertiary. The primary sector like agriculture and livestock and forestry contributed little to the city’s economy, which majorly depends on service sector.
