Bid on Coop Bank official’s life, 11 booked

The police have booked 11 persons on charges of extortion and attempt to murder Sarabjit Singh (50), who is reportedly holding a senior managerial position in Cooperative Bank at Sector 34, Chandigarh.
The police said three of the accused had been identified as Raju, Suri and Deepak Mishra, while the remaining were yet to be identified.
The victim alleged that he was beaten up by the accused and one of them opened fire at him while another one also threatened him with his pistol to make him sign on property documents.
The police said Sarabjit was called by the accused to Sector 68 where they “detained” him at a house during the intervening night of August 7 and 8.
The victim was beaten up by the accused. “He sustained injury marks on his body,” said the police.
The victim told the police that he was contacted by a person, who claimed to be a property dealer. The property dealer asked him to sell his property. Sarabjit alleged that three days ago, he agreed to meet him at Mohali and the accused took him to a house at Sector 68 where his accomplices were already present. He alleged that at least five of them were having firearms.
“The accused detained him at the house and beat him up to make him sign on property documents,” said the police. “The next morning, the victim was being shifted to some other location by the accused in a car when he managed to escape from their clutches,” said the police, adding that the victim jumped off the car and took shelter at a gurdwara in Sohana. From there, he contacted one of his acquaintances.
