Chandigarh: BJP candidates were on Monday unanimously elected chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the Zila Parishad and the Panchayat Samiti. A special meeting of elected members of the Panchayat Samiti and the Zila Parishad was convened to elect the chairpersons and the vice-chairpersons. Geeta Rani was elected chairperson and Santosh Rani vice-chairperson of the Zila Parishad while Nanak Singh was elected chairman and Sukhwant Kaur vice-chairperson of the Panchayat Samiti. The elected leaders said they would strive for the development of villages. The elections for the Zila Parishad and panchayats were held recently in which a majority of the BJP candidates won. Sanjay Tandon, city BJP president, said this was the first time BJP representatives were occupying all important political posts in Chandigarh be it Member of Parliament, Mayor, Senior Deputy Mayor, chairman of the Market Committee or chairpersons of the Zila Parishad and the Panchayat Samiti. Kids' death: Efforts on to trace car
Kharar: The police are making efforts to trace the driver and the car which mowed down three minor children of the nearby Bhukari village on Sunday. The accident had occurred near Khanpur village on the Kharar-Kurali road around 9.30 am on Sunday in which three children -- a brother-sister duo and a neighbour -- were killed. Kharar SHO Satnam Singh said the police were looking for CCTV footage and gathering information from persons who were near the spot when the accident took place. The police expressed the hope that they would trace the car soon. Meanwhile, all three children were cremated at their native Bhukari village on Sunday. OC
Gold chain snatched from woman
Chandigarh: A gold chain was allegedly snatched from a woman by bike riders near her house in Sector 37 on Sunday evening. According to the police, victim Sangita was on a stroll near her house when two bike-borne persons came and snatched her chain. A case under Sections 356 and 379 of the IPC has been registered at the Sector 39 police station. The police are scrutinising the CCTV footage of the area to get a clue. TNS
Truck catches fire at Dera Bassi
Dera Bassi: A concrete mixture truck went up in flames after it reportedly got stuck in live wires at GBP Colony, Dera Bassi, on Monday. The driver of the truck suffered a shock and was taken to a nearby hospital, sources said. The incident occurred around 6.30 pm when the truck was on its way back from GBP Colony. Midway, the truck got stuck in live wires, which were reportedly hanging low, and caught fire. A fire engine from Dera Bassi was pressed into service. OC
