Chandigarh, August 23
St John’s School, Sector 26, Chandigarh, here issued a warning to parents on Blue Whale game today.
In an advisory, the parents are asked to monitor their children’s social media activity for a new game that challenges participants to harm themselves. “The Blue Whale game or Blue Whale Challenge is believed to be a suicide game wherein a group of administrators or a certain curator gives a participant a task to complete daily — for a period of 50 days — the final of which is the participant committing suicide. Participants are expected to share photos of the
challenges/tasks completed by them. Attempts to opt out are countered with threats by the administrators of the game,” said the advisory.
It said, “Users are encouraged to tag friends on social media and ‘challenge’ them to participate in the game. These daily tasks start off easy — such as listening to certain
genres of music, waking up at odd hours, watching a horror movie, among others, and then slowly escalate on to carving out shapes on one’s skin, self-mutilation and eventually suicide.”
“We request parents to search through their children’s social media accounts for use of the #BlueWhaleChallenge or photos of a blue whale,” said the school.
