The Rajpura police have registered two cases of corruption and fraud of lakhs against Rajpura Municipal Council (MC) president Praveen Chhabra.
The first case is pertaining to laying sewerage line in an unauthorised colony and connecting it to the main sewerage to benefit a contractor. On a complaint by advocate Sucha Singh, Chhabra has been booked. This sewerage line was laid behind Navyug Colony in old Rajpura for Rs 36.17 lakh and was wrongly connected to the main lines to benefit the contactor since the residents were not buying plots without a sewerage connection.
The second complaint was made in 2013 by advocate Abhinav Oberoi that in 2011, Chhabra, along with the then executive officer, Varinder Jain; and contractor Vikram, had done Rs 59.54 lakh fraud in the name of beautification of parks in the city. They were supposed to install fountains in these parks which were never installed.
The police have registered a case under various Sections of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988. SHO Gurcharan Singh said the Municipal Council president was at large and hunt was on to nab him. Meanwhile, Chhabra had reportedly resigned from his post on Monday afternoon after the matter came to light.
