Chandigarh, March 7

The Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC), Landran, has been awarded a grant of Rs 23 lakh from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for the development of nanotechnology-based lung cancer vaccine.

Dr Jitender Madan and his team from the College of Pharmacy, CGC Landran, have been awarded this grant. They will be conducting pre-clinical analysis on the subject over a period of three years.

“Lung cancer is among the most common cancers in India and accounts for more deaths than any other type of cancer. Lung cancer is principally caused by cigarette smoking, tobacco chewing in addition to air pollution. As per the WHO statistics, it results in around 1.69 million cancer deaths per year worldwide,” said the college spokesperson.

“This was the reason that encouraged Dr Madan, whose research interest lies in nanobiology of cancer, to take up this project to develop a vaccine to treat this cancer,” added the spokesperson.

Satnam Singh Sandhu, Chairman, CGC Landran, and Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal appreciated the efforts of the team and ensured them CGC’s complete support in undertaking the project.
