The protesters demanded speedy investigation into the case. Shreya (25), a software engineer, was found hanging from a ceiling fan at her flat in Noida on January 5. Shreya, who hailed from Chandigarh, had married Nitin in August 2018. Since both worked in Noida, they had taken a flat on rent. According to their neighbours, the couple would often fight over trivial matters.

Shreya had locked herself in her bedroom after a tiff with Nitin around 1 am and the police had received a call around 3 pm from Nitin, informing them that his wife had committed suicide. Nitin informed the police that he had an argument with his wife over the preparation of dinner after which locked herself in the bedroom. Nitin said he had used duplicate keys to open the room and found his wife hanging from the ceiling fan.

However, Shreya’s parents lodged a complaint against Nitin and his mother, accusing them of harassing their daughter for dowry.
