The air quality has started improving in the city with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching to a moderate level.
According to figures released by the Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee for November 11, the Air Quality Index was 160 in Sector 17, 118 in Kaimbwala village and 153 in Sector 39.
The value between 101 and 200 lies in the moderate category, but it also causes breathing discomfort to people with lung and heart diseases. There are six categories of the AQI namely ‘good’, ‘satisfactory’, ‘moderately polluted’, ‘poor’, ‘very poor’, and ‘severe’. The AQI of 0-50 is categorised as good, 51-100 satisfactory, 101-200 moderately polluted, 201-300 poor, 301-400 very poor and 401-500 severe.
On November 10, the AQI was 313 in the Industrial Area, 233 in PEC in Sector 12, and 303 at Kaimbwala village. On November 9, the AQI was 303 in Sector 39, 227 at Kaimbwala village and 253 in Sector 17.
On November 8, the AQI in the Industrial Area was highest so far recording a figure of 375.
Meanwhile on November 11, in Sector 17 PM 10 (RSPM) was 190 microgram per cubic metre, though permissible value was 100. The PM 2.5 was 71 microgram per cubic metre though permissible value was 60.
In Sector 39, the PM 10 (RSPM) was 165 and PM 2.5 was 76. At Kaimbwala village, PM 10 (RSPM) was 127, while PM 2.5 was 59.
Meanwhile, the weather department has predicted cloudy weather ahead and light rain on November 15. It is attributed to weather disturbances.
Trains running late
Due to smog and fog, Kalka-Howrah has been running late by 15 hours, Unchahar Express has been running 11-hour late, Shatabdi Express, which was to arrive at Chandigarh in the morning, was 2 hours late and Ekta Express was 3-hour late.
One flight delayed
Mohali: One flight was delayed at the Chandigarh International Airport on Monday. The Air India Pune-Chandigarh-Mumbai flight was delayed by half an hour. Chandigarh International Airport Limited PRO Deepesh Joshi said one flight, AI 0814/642, scheduled to depart from Chandigarh at 3.30 pm, was delayed by 30 minutes. In the past week, the flight operations had been hit with several flights cancelled and rescheduled due to poor visibility and runway repair at Delhi airport for three days from November 7 to November 10.
