Swaran Singh Kamboj, president of the UT Cadre Educational Employees’ Union, said the Education Department was deliberately disturbing teachers by increasing the time of the government schools.

The Education Department of Punjab has issued a letter stating a change in school timings from October 1. The primary schools will function from 9 am to 3 pm. All middle, higher and senior secondary schools will function from 9 am to 3.20 pm.

Kamboj said the difference between primary and middle, higher and senior schools in Punjab was just 20 minutes, whereas the UT Education Department has increased the timings by 40 minutes.

In Chandigarh, the new timings of schools are from 7.50 am to 2.30 pm till October. From November, the timings will be 8.20 am to 3.00 pm.

For double shift schools, the morning timings are from 7 am to 1.40 pm till October. From November onwards, the timings will be from 7.50 am to 2.30 pm.

For evening shift, the timings are from 11.15 am to 5.45 pm till October and from 10.30 am to 5pm in November.

Savinder Singh, president of the Joint Action Committee (JAC), said: “The changes have been introduced as per the RTE Act. However, we demand relaxation in school timings. Also in Punjab, the timings are changed in October. Why the timings have been introduced a month later in Chandigarh?”
