The City Beautiful stands third among the seven union territories (UTs) when it comes to road accidents and deaths in road mishaps.

As per the report prepared by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Chandigarh reported third highest of road accidents among the UTs, followed by Delhi and Puducherry, in 2016.

While Delhi witnessed the maximum number of road accidents with a total of 7,375 mishaps leaving 1,591 people dead and 7,154 injured, Puducherry witnessed 1,766 road accidents leading to 244 deaths and leaving 1,786 persons injured.

Chandigarh that stands third among the Union Territories witnessed 428 accidents leading to 151 causalities and leaving 329 injured.

As per the report, Lakshadweep witnessed only one road accident leading to one death.

The report mentions that out of a total of 428 accidents in Chandigarh, 144 were fatal road accidents leading to 151 deaths, while 18 persons received grievous injuries and 202 received minor injuries.

A majority of the accidents reported in Chandigarh were on city roads, while a lesser number of accidents were reported on the National Highway (NH) in the city.

As per the report, a total of 381 road accidents were reported on city roads apart from the National Highway, during which a total of 127 persons died. Meanwhile, 47 road accidents were reported on NH roads in the city leading to 24 deaths.

Out of the total mishaps, 380 accidents took place due to overspeeding of vehicles, 10 due to red-light jumping and nine due to drunken driving.

When asked about the efforts made by the police to bring down the road accidents in the city, UT SSP Traffic Shashank Anand said the road accident analysis cell of the traffic police was being strengthened.

“We are also expediting the road engineering proposals pending with the UT Engineering Department,” UT SSP Traffic Shashank Anand said.


Delhi tops the chart

While Delhi witnessed the maximum number of road accidents with a total of 7,375 mishaps leaving 1,591 people dead and 7,154 injured, Puducherry witnessed 1,766 road accidents leading to 244 deaths and leaving 1,786 persons injured.

Fact file

  • Out of the total 428 road accidents reported in 2016, 86 accidents were reported between 9 pm and 12 midnight, while 70 accidents took place between 12 noon and 3 pm. 
  • A total of 66 hit-and-run cases were reported in 2016 in which 21 persons died and 65 were injured.
