Chandigarh, February 6
To comprehend the Saraswati river’s impact on the socio-cultural aspects of Indian civilization, the PU and the Haryana Sarasvati Heritage Development Board, Panchkula, is organising a two-day international conference.
The theme of the conference is ‘Agricultural practices and archaeological evidence and exploration along Saraswati river palaeochannel’ and it will trace the origin, journey, relevance and disappearance of the river, taking into consideration the archaeological evidence and recent explorations along the river’s palaeochannel.
Anju Suri, professor and chairperson of the PU Department of History, said: “Hailed as the mighty and glorious river in the Rig Veda, the memory of this river remains embedded in several religious scriptures and cultural memories of Indian society.” She added that the relation of Saraswati river with the Harappan civilization needs to be restudied in the light of recent discoveries.
