Opposing the  price hike of essential commodities, the Chandigarh Youth Congress celebrated the birthday of PM Narendra Modi in a unique way. They gifted him spectacles. Youth Congress activists also gifted glasses to Petroleum Minister Dharmendra  Pardhan. Ex-president of the Youth Congress Harmail Kesri and others said they had gifted spectacles to the PM to make him see the suffering of the people. A scuffle took place between some activists and employees of a shop, who  beat up the former. Kesari  said they later apologised  to the  workers. TNS

Cleanliness drive 

Chandigarh: On the 67th birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the local unit of BJP carried out cleanliness drives and held blood donation camps at various places of the city. State president of the BJP, Chandigarh, Sanjay Tandon led the cleanliness drive in Sector 8.

12 hurt as canter overturns

Kharar: Twelve persons, including a woman, sustained injuries when a canter in which they were going towards Banur overturned near a marriage palace on the Kharar-Landran Road here on Sunday. Contractor Surjit Singh said he was taking these labourers to Banur for some construction work. All of a sudden, the canter overturned and all labourers suffered minor injuries. They were taken to the Civil Hospital, Kharar, for treatment. OC

Two held with illicit liquor

Kharar: The police have arrested Prince Kumar of Kharar following the recovery of 50 bottles of liquor from his possession. Head Constable Mohan Lal got a tip-off that the accused used to sell liquor in this area at higher rates after brining the same from Chandigarh. A case under the Excise Act has been registered against him. Similarly, the Mullanpur Garibdas police have arrested Sikandar Singh of Hosiarpur village following the recovery of 20 bottles of liquor. He brought the liquor bottles from Chandigarh illegally. A case under the Excise Act has been registered. OC

Pulse polio drive begins

Dera Bassi: The three-day pulse polio campaign to administer polio drops to children up to the age group of five years began in the city on Sunday. Deepinder Singh Dhillon, General Secretary, Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, along with other health officials, inaugurated the campaign by administering polio drops to children at the Civil Hospital, Dera Bassi. Sangeeta Jain, SMO, Dera Bassi, said nearly 35,230 children up to five years’ of age would be administered polio drops under the campaign. She said about 149 teams had been constituted and 28 trained supervisors had been deputed to supervise the campaign. The teams would visit the rural areas, slums and do door to door to ensure that no children remains without polio drops. OC

Man dies in road accident

Kalka: A man was killed in a road accident. The mishap took place around 9 pm near Kiratpur village of the Pinjore Block on NH-21A (Pinjore-Nalagarh). The victim, Vikram Singh, suffered serious injuries. He was rushed to the Pinjore PHC, where doctors declared him brought dead. The police are investigating the case. OC

Cancer detection camp

Chandigarh: Amrit Cancer Foundation, in association with the World Cancer Care Trust, UK, will organise a cancer detection and awareness camp on Monday at Gurdwara Sahib, Sector 19, Chandigarh, and Sector 7 market in Panchkula from 10 am to 4 pm on Tuesday. MP Kirron Kher will inaugurate the camp on Monday. Mammography for breast cancer, PAP smear test for uterus cancer, PSA test for prostate cancer and oral cancer check up will be done free of cost at the camp. Special talks and awareness seminars will also be held. A team of 25 members of the medical and paramedical staff will conduct the camp. TNS

Int’l Ozone Day celebrated

Patiala: Public College Samana celebrated International Ozone Day on Saturday under the guidance of college principal Arvind Mohan. On the occasion, debate and paper-reading competition were organised by the Departments of Agriculture, Medical and Non-Medical. Jaswinder Bir Singh, in-charge of these departments, spoke about Ozone Day. Pavitter Singh of BSc Agriculture stood first in the debate competition. In paper-reading, Pargat Singh, a student of Agriculture, stood first.

Multani Mal Modi College

Faculty of Biological Sciences of Multani Mal Modi College, Patiala, in collaboration with the Forest Extension Division, Patiala, organised expert lectures on the occasion of International Ozone Day. The day commemorated the signing of Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer and this year marks its 30th anniversary. Principal Khushvinder Kumar spoke about the theme of Ozone Day this year "Caring for all life under Sun". He said the ozone layer played an important role in protecting human health and environment and urged students to be conscious of the dangers of using excessive chemicals that might harm this life-preserving layer and remain committed to the environmental concerns by becoming environmental ambassadors.

Police DAV Public School

International Ozone Day was celebrated at Police DAV Public School, Patiala. In a special assembly organised by Zinnia House, students shared their views on afforestation through speeches and rallies. Nishu of Class VIII spread awareness on conserving trees to prevent the depletion of ozone layer. Students were shown educational videos about the harmful effects on the ozone layer. Teachers motivated the students to reduce and recycle waste materials to protect the Earth from the harmful effects of ultra violet radiations. Students of Primary Wing presented a skit depicting the harmful effects of excessive use of technology on environment. A quiz was organised by "Eco and Nature Club". School principal Meena Thapar encouraged students for adopting environment-friendly techniques.

DAV Patiala

DAV Patiala observed International Ozone Conservation Day with this year's theme "30 Montreal Protocol of caring for all life under the Sun", on the school premises. To mark the day, a self-composed poem, "Our best friend MR Ozone" was presented by Upasana Madaan with an aim to make students aware about the protection provided by this fragile shield of gas from the harmful effects of Sun rays.
