Constable dies as revolver goes off

A senior constable of PAP 82 Battalion, Jatinder Singh, who was posted in the security of ADGP Arpit Shukla, died when his service revolver, which he was cleaning, went off in his room at Gulmohar City, Desumajra, around 11.15 pm yesterday.

ASI Major Singh, investigating officer in the case, said the police had recorded the statement of the victim’s younger brother, Gurinder Singh, a resident of Mugal Majri village in Ropar district. He told the police that Jatinder Singh was also a driver with senior police officers. He was staying in a rented room in Gumohar City.

Last night, he had called up Gurinder. After some time, Gurinder got a call from someone that Jatinder had died of a bullet injury. He reached Kharar and came to know that Jatinder was cleaning his service revolver, which went off accidentally and the bullet hit his temple. He died in the spot.

The victim was 37 years old and a father of two. The Kharar Sadar police have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC. — OC
