Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has approved the construction of a ring road around Patiala, connecting Sirhind and Bhadson Road, and leading up to Nabha road till Sangrur. The decision has been taken in order to decongest the city.
The Chief Minister asked the principal secretary PWD (B & R) to immediately take up the pending issues related to the ring road with the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry to ensure that it is completed in a time-bound manner.
The Chief Minister also gave a nod for the construction of another ring road which will connect Sirhind Road through the industrial zone during a meeting with the officials of the PWD Department. The 200-meter wide southern ring in the South-East direction of Patiala city will connect Rajpura Road with the alleviated Southern Bypass and Sanaur Road.
Officials said the Union Minister had already agreed to consider the construction of ring roads around major cities, including Sangrur, Bathinda, Jalandhar, Patiala, Mohali and Ludhiana. The state government will bear 50 per cent of the cost on the account of land acquisition for the projects while the rest of the expenditure incurred, including the remaining 50 per cent acquisition cost would be borne by the Union Ministry.
The Chief Minister said it was important to create a network of ring roads around major cities to divert the non-city traffic to ease vehicular congestion on inner city routes.
The steps are being taken in view of the future growth trends of urbanisation, economic growth, synchronization with planned development as per the master plan along with smooth and safe movement of city and external traffic.
