Deep in contention for twin finals

Chandigarh, November 6

Deep Munim rallied from a set down to beat Yashvardhan Singh in the boys’ U-16 quarterfinals before he stunned third seed Nitin Jaipal Singh in straight sets to move into the U-18 semifinals at the CLTA-AITA Super Series Tennis Tournament here today.

Munim lost the opening set 4-6 against Yashvardhan, but came back strongly to win the next two sets 6-4 6-4 to seal a spot in the boys’ U-16 semifinals.   

In the U-18 quarterfinals, Munim prevailed 7-6(3) 7-5 over Nitin.

Meanwhile, top seed Krishan Hooda drubbed Ajnabi Dahiya 6-3 6-3 to march into the boys’ U-18 semifinals.  

Sushant Dabas blanked Shashikant Rajput 6-0 6-0, while Divanshu Hooda came from behind to beat Yogee Panwar in the quarterfinals. Hooda lost the first set 4-6, but prevailed 6-2 6-4 in the next two to stay alive in the competition.

In the remaining boys’ U-16 quarterfinal matches, Khush Sharma recovered from a one set deficit to beat Ansh Kundu 3-6 6-0 6-2. 

Sukhpreet Singh Jhoje humbled Ajay Singh 7-6(1) 6-2, while Jitin Kumar Chetry edged out Tushar Mittal 6-3 6-3.

Vanshika motors on

In the girls’ competition, Vaishnavi Adkar continued her impressive run as she won both her U-16 and U-18 quarterfinal ties on Wednesday.   

Vaishnavi packed off Aarni Reddy Yellu 6-4 6-1 to seal a spot in the U-16 semis, while she rallied from a set down to beat Ramesh Janani in the U-18 quarterfinals.  

After losing the opening set 2-6, Vaishnavi seized the next two sets 6-1 6-0 to stay in contention for a place in the final. 

Second seed Sanvi Ahluwalia, meanwhile, overcame Hitkamya Narwal in the girls’ U-16 quarterfinals. Sanvi won 3-6 6-4 6-1.

Fifth seed Suryanshi Tanwar dismissed Anoushka Sharma 6-2 6-2, while eighth seed Janani Ramesh downed Harleen Kaur Dhanda 6-4 6-1 in the quarters. 

In the girls’ U-18 quarterfinals, second seed Vanshika Choudhary registered a 6-1 6-3 Aarni, while Deepalakshmi Vanaraja prevailed 6-2 5-7 6-2 over Sanjami Arora. 

Third seed Kavya Khirwar survived an intense battle against Ananya SR to move into the last-four. 

Kavya lost the opening set 5-7, but fought her way back into the match with a 6-4 win in the second set. Ananya lifted her game in the decider to pose a serious threat to the third seed. However, it was Kavya who survived 7-6(7) in the end.
