Delhi RERA extended to UT

Home buyers in city can now file complaints against realtors, including the Chandigarh Housing Board, for delay in construction or any other such issues before the Real Estate Regulatory Authority (RERA).

Sources said the UT Administration issued a notification on June 4, extending the appointment of the Delhi RERA to Chandigarh.

In the notification, the UT stated that the Delhi RERA will act as regulator for both Delhi and Chandigarh under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, to look into grievances of home buyers against unscrupulous builders.

The notification mentions Vijay S Madan as the Chairperson and Gyan Prakash Srivastva and Ramesh Chandra as members of the authority.

The UT Administration had earlier asked the Union Ministry of Urban Development to bring Chandigarh under the RERA, Delhi. The ministry acceded to the UT request.

Besides private builders and real estate firms, government agencies will also come under the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act. The constitution of single regulator has been made on the lines of the State Election Commission, which conducts municipal elections in Delhi and Chandigarh.

Chandigarh was one of the first UTs to set up a temporary RERA in October 31, 2016. The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act came into force on May 1, 2016, to protect home buyers from developers. As per the Act, all states are required to set up RERA. The Act makes it mandatory for builders to register with the regulatory authority before launching or even advertising their project. JD Gupta, a property consultant, said extending the Delhi RERA to Chandigarh would not help much to city residents as they would have to go to Delhi to plead their cases.
