The elections will be held at the Physics Department of Panjab University (PU) at 11. 30 am. As many as 124 department representatives will elect the executive members.

Jashan Kamboj, president of the PUCSC, who belongs to the NSUI, said they would meet in the night to decide names of the candidates. The NSUI will contest all executive posts and claims of having the support of 50 DRs.

Meanwhile, the Panjab University Students’ Union (PUSU) claims to have the support of 45 department representatives. PUSU won the post of the joint secretary in the student council election held on September 7 in alliance with the Indian Students’ Association.

“A total of 80-85 votes are polled every year. So, there is no need of any alliance. We want to fight all five posts. If we win, we would give the no-confidence motion against the NSUI, which has come to the power with the support of the PU authorities,” said PUSU leader Navaldeep.

The Students for Society too claimed the support of 15 DRs. “We may not fight on all five seats. We will focus on a few. Candidates are yet to be finalised,” said Harman Deep, media in-charge of the SFS.

ABVP claims to have the support of eight DRs. “We are looking for an alliance with the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) or the Students’ Organisation of India (SOI). We want to contest at least one seat,” said Kushal Koundal, ABVP leader.

Meanwhile, SOI claimed of having the support of 20 DRs. “We want to contest on at least two executive posts. For one seat, we may field a DR from the Department of Laws,” said Vicky Middukhera, SOI president.

Oppn needs to win all seats to oust NSUI

If the opposition wins all five seats, only then it can move the no-confidence motion. The no-confidence motion, against any of the office- bearers or any elected member of the executive committee, can be moved only if the 1/3 members are in favour it, giving 15 days’ notice in writing to the Dean (Student Welfare). The motion, after a discussion, will be put to vote. If 2/3 of the total members of the students’ council are in favour of it, it will be treated as carried.

Oath-taking ceremony put off

  • Leaders of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), who won the recent Panjab University (PU) student council elections, have postponed the oath-taking ceremony in the absence of a prominent leader to attend it. No date has been finalised for it yet.
  • The party wanted to have Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh as the chief guest but he is abroad. They also went to meet Punjab Technical Education Minister Charanjit Singh Channi but the plan could not  materialise. The Punjab CM will be back by September 18.
  • “We have taken the charge of the office and have started working. The Punjab CM is abroad. We will call him either for the oath-taking ceremony or hold some other function,” said Sunny Mehta, an NSUI leader.
  • “We want the Punjab CM during the swearing-in ceremony. He has made no commitment. If he comes, he may announce some sops for the PU,” said Divyanshu Buddhiraja, another NSUI leader.
  • The NSUI also celebrated the victory of the party in the Delhi University Student polls.
