A group of Senate and Syndicate members today met the Punjab Education Minister Aruna Chaudhary.
They discussed the fiscal crisis of Panjab Unviersity with the minister and asked Punjab to start giving the varsity 40 per cent grant as was the norm before 1966. They apprised her of the problems of the varsity, including the incidents after the fee hike and ultimately the 10 per cent hike.
The group has asked the minister to intervene and help the PU by not sticking to the fixed Rs 20 crore grant which amounts to 8 per cent of the deficit. They have asked Punjab to increase it to 40 per cent which will save the PU and prevent burdening the students.
The group says that Chaudhary promised to put the case of Panjab University at high priority among her tasks and assured Punjab Government’s support to the cause. She invited the members to suggest more ways to help improve education in Punjab from Primary to University level. Earlier also, the Punjab government had said in court that the request of the PU is under consideration.
